Why Pick a Gay Psychologist?

It's about fit and authenticity

Choosing a psychologist is a personal decision. You may be looking for someone who understands your experiences, respects your identity and can help you work through challenges without needing to explain every aspect of your life.

For some gay men and LGBTQIA+ people, working with a gay psychologist can offer an additional sense of familiarity and understanding. At Lebensfreude Psychology Clinic in Adelaide, I combine this perspective with evidence-based psychological care, tailored to your individual needs and goals.

The value of shared understanding

Being gay is not a mental health problem. Nevertheless, navigating identity, relationships and social expectations can sometimes bring challenges that are difficult to discuss with people who have not had similar experiences.

You may be looking for support with:

  • Identity and self-acceptance: exploring your sexuality, developing confidence in who you are and working through feelings of uncertainty or shame.

  • Coming out and family relationships: navigating disclosure, differing expectations, acceptance and boundaries with family or friends.

  • Dating, intimacy and relationships: building meaningful connections, understanding recurring relationship patterns and navigating the complexities of dating.

  • Anxiety, depression and self-esteem: addressing emotional distress, self-criticism, loneliness or the effects of difficult life experiences.

  • Internalised stigma and belonging: exploring how negative social messages or past experiences may have influenced your self-perception.

  • Life transitions: working through changes in relationships, career, family circumstances or personal identity.

Having a shared aspect of identity can sometimes make it easier to begin these conversations. It may offer a sense of recognition and reduce the need to explain certain experiences. Ultimately, however, what matters most is developing a therapeutic relationship in which you feel understood, respected and able to work towards meaningful change.

An affirming, individualised approach

My approach is LGBTQIA+ affirming. Your sexuality and relationships are approached with respect, rather than treated as problems to be corrected. Therapy provides a space to explore your experiences openly, without judgement or assumptions about what your life should look like.

I recognise that every person’s experience is different. You may be comfortable and confident in your identity while struggling with anxiety, depression or relationship difficulties. Alternatively, you may be working through questions about identity, navigating family expectations or trying to understand how past experiences continue to affect you.

Where relevant, therapy can also explore the intersection of sexuality, gender diversity and neurodivergence, including ADHD and autism.

Evidence-based psychological therapy

A shared identity can contribute to a sense of connection, but effective psychological care also requires clinical expertise and an approach suited to your needs.

As a Clinical Psychologist, I draw on evidence-based approaches, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): identifying and changing unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour that contribute to distress.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): developing psychological flexibility, making space for difficult emotions and taking action in line with your values.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): exploring different aspects of your inner experience with curiosity and compassion.

These approaches can be integrated according to your circumstances and goals. Our work may involve developing practical coping strategies, understanding longstanding patterns, improving relationships or building a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

A space where you can be yourself

You should not have to spend therapy explaining or defending your identity. My aim is to provide a professional, confidential and non-judgemental environment where you can speak openly about the things that matter to you.

You do not need to be in crisis or have a particular diagnosis to seek support. Therapy can also be an opportunity to understand yourself better, strengthen your relationships and create a life that feels more aligned with your values.

Discover compassionate, non-judgemental and evidence-based care tailored to your unique needs.
